I was on the boat sailing. The wind started to blow harder and harder. The boom was leash and started to give. I had no time to save all my personal belongings, but it was of no interest to me. I left them there, waiting for the faith to become what it ought.

It is also said that when a soul of a sailor is about to leave earth, it is brought to the better place, on the seabed, by beautiful mermaids. I was about to let myself drown in this wonderful dream, when my memory did what the land man’s does: I remembered. Not all my life, or the best and most important episodes, but Odysseus encounter with the creatures of the sea. It wasn’t a matter of preserving life anymore, now it was all about the wittiest. Everybody knows how sailors are presumptuous and arrogant about their cleverness and cunnin.
I decided to trade my hearing definitively with my last piece of mind. I went deaf.
When you lose a sense, all the others gain from it, efficiency and clearness. I left my hearing and all of a sudden I could clearly saw the chorus. The voices weren’t coming from mermaids or the wind, they were a song sung by a thousand sailors souls rooting for my life not to end.
Maybe with their help, with their strength, or maybe it was just Archimedes’ principle finally working, the boat turned over once again. The wind was still blowing strong, but now I knew what to do.
I put about, yelled at the sea, at Neptune, and hauled the mainsail again.
Never they will have me until my moment comes. At that point I will be one of the thousand and one voices of the sea.
